Daniel Smith Watercolour Grounds can be used to prime various surfaces to make them suitable for watercolour painting, including wood, canvas, fabric, metal, ceramic, plastic, glass, board, stone, etc.
These Watercolour Grounds create a soft absorbent surface with a slight cotton texture that is like Cold Press (NOT) Watercolour Paper. It is an excellent surface for all watercolours and thinned acrylics.
The Titanium White Watercolour Ground can be used to cover up any mistakes made when painting with watercolours. It can then over-painted.
The Transparent Watercolour Ground is ideal for painting on a surface where you want the original surface colour to show through. It can create an interesting watercolour painting when used on wood or decorative papers.
You can also add texture to the watercolour grounds and use them for mixed media artwork with inks, pen, acrylic and more.
To Use: Firstly, make sure your surface is clean and dry. If you are applying to a non-absorbent surface such as metal or plastic, sand it lightly first. Then, evenly brush on the Watercolour Ground straight from the container, using a soft synthetic brush or a foam roller / brush for a smoother finish. It has a thick, brushable consistency.
The Watercolour Grounds are highly pigmented so one coat will be sufficient for most surfaces. If it is a very absorbent surface such as MDF, you may need a second application once the first is fully dry.
Drying Time: Let the Watercolour Ground dry for at least 24 hours before painting on it with watercolours. This will allow it to attain the right degree of absorption.
