Clairefontaine was established in Etival near Strasbourg in 1858 by Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger. The paper mill used cotton form the local textile industry and wood was introduced as the raw material. Clairefontaine initially produced papers and envelopes before progressing to a wide range of notebooks. They are best known for making the first school notebook in France. Clairfontaine now manufacture a huge range of art supplies including drawing and painting pads, craft papers and world renowned satin smooth writing paper.
